Feb 11, Silversea Adds Expedition Ship

Silversea Cruises plans to launch its new expedition ship in June 2008, after undergoing a multi-million-dollar renovation at the Fincantieri shipyard in Trieste, Italy. The 1A ice-rated vessel, originally acquired as World Discoverer last September, will get exterior design modifications, state-of-the-art technological enhancements and a complete upgrade of all guest accommodations and public spaces. The ship is also being outfitted with a fleet of eight Zodiac boats.

In a related development, the company announced the appointment of Conrad Combrink as Silversea's director of expeditions, with responsibility for developing the ship's itineraries and program. He will also oversee the recruitment of expedition staff and lecturers. Combrink's career of over 10 years in expedition cruising includes serving as expedition leader on World Discoverer.

Following the naming ceremony in Monte Carlo in May, the ship will set sail June 12 from London on an inaugural season focusing on polar adventures. Sailing first to the Arctic Circle, Iceland and Greenland for the summer, the ship will then reposition to South America and Antarctica for autumn and winter voyages. After the ship's refit, the vessel will accommodate 132 guests in 66 ocean-view suites, many featuring private verandas.

Staterooms and suites will range from 215 to over 600 square feet, with an average size of 300-plus square feet. Twenty suites will feature more than 400 square feet of luxury. All staterooms and suites will have flat-screen TVs. The ship will feature a single-seating main dining room, a library with desktop computers and Internet access, a boutique, a beauty salon, a fitness center, a full-service spa and two Jacuzzi pools. The ship will be equipped with state-of-the-art satellite communication systems, providing bow-to-stern wireless Internet access and cellular phone service.

Feb 6, Celebrity Unveils New Restaurants for Celebrity Solstice

Celebrity Cruises said its new Celebrity Solstice, set to sail on its first revenue cruise on Dec. 14, will feature 10 restaurants. The line unveiled its dining plans at an event at New York's Per Se restaurant last night. Celebrity Solstice will carry approximately 2,850 passengers.

Celebrity said it has partnered with some of the best restaurant designers in the business to create the new restaurants onboard Celebrity Solstice, among them Adam Tihany, who has created such restaurants as Per Se, Jean Georges, Le Cirque, The Sea Grill and Osteria del Circo in New York; Aureole, Bouchon and Seablue in Las Vegas; and Monte's and the Mandarin Bar in the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in London. Tihany, in his first restaurant aboard a cruise ship, has designed the two-level Grand Epernay dining room; the classic steakhouse Tuscan Grille, and the Oceanview Cafe on the ship's lido deck. Grand Epernay features a two-story wine tower, similar to what Tihany created in Aureole in Vegas.

The new menus are being created by Jacques Van Staden, Celebrity's vice president of food and beverage, in conjunction with Celebrity's culinary consultant Blau & Associates. Van Staden was previously one of the top chefs and restaurateurs in Washington, D.C., and Las Vegas. Blau is credited with shaping the dining experience at Bellagio and Wynn Resort in Las Vegas, and is also developing the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino's Simon kitchen and bar.

Dining venues aboard Celebrity Solstice will include Grand Epernay, the main dining room open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, featuring French cuisine and the two-story wine tower; Tuscan Grille, a combination of Mediterranean and California Napa cuisine; Silk Harvest, a casual specialty restaurant featuring Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese, Chinese and Indian selections; Blu, which offers "clean cuisine" exclusively for guests booked on the new AquaClass category of accommodations, with healthy food options; Murano, a twist on the restaurant of the same name on Celebrity Century, blending classic and modern Continental cuisine in an elegant setting; Bistro on Five, a casual dining area where guests can eat or take out sandwiches, soups, salads, desserts and other entrees; Cafe al Bacio & Gelateria, an upscale coffee house serving European cafe fare as well as gelato, signature coffees, teas, fresh-based pastries and more; AquaSpa Cafe, a dining option for guests seeking lighter fare; Mast Grill & Bar, featuring comfort food in a poolside venue; Oceanview Cafe & Grill, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with food stations reflecting where the ship is sailing.

Seabourn Cruise Line has opened reservations for the 2010 inaugural World Cruise of the new Seabourn Odyssey. The 108-day voyage departs from Fort Lauderdale on Jan. 5, 2010. A 92-day, west coast alternative departs Los Angeles on Jan. 21. The voyage ends in Piraeus (Athens), Greece, on April 24, 2010, by which time guests will have visited 42 ports in 26 countries on five continents. It also represents the first time that any of The Yachts of Seabourn has undertaken a world cruise. "A world cruise is an exciting prospect for travelers at any time," said Seabourn President and CEO Pamela Conover. "And for any ship, there is only ever one first time. So when Seabourn Odyssey makes her maiden call at each port, it will be a special occasion that will never be repeated."

The full world cruise qualifies for Seabourn's Grand Voyage Savings of 50 percent, creating a range of per-person, double occupancy fares from $53,745 for a 295-square-foot Category A accommodations to $254,745 for a Grand Suite measuring 1,135 square feet with three private verandas adding another 301 square feet of outdoor space.
Seabourn has packed the voyage with value-added benefits and features for full World Cruise passengers. For those embarking at Fort Lauderdale, the voyage begins with a complimentary private-car transfer from their homes to any gateway airport within 100 miles. Upon arrival at Fort Lauderdale, full cruisers can attend a pre-cruise celebration and receive luxury accommodation the night before embarkation. Private car transfers at both ends of the voyage are included for all full-world cruise guests. Other complimentary perquisites include first-class roundtrip airfare, luggage shipping by Seabourn's Personal Valet and a $1,000-per-person shipboard credit. During the voyage, are five shoreside events for full-cruise passengers in addition to six Exclusively Seabourn experiences to which all guests are invited. Commemorative gifts, gala balls and a full program of added enrichment programs and celebrity entertainment are also planned.

Three shorter "World Voyages" are also available -- a 69-day voyage from Fort Lauderdale to Hong Kong, a 53-day segment from Los Angeles to Hong Kong, and a 39-day cruise from Hong Kong to Piraeus. The Seabourn Odyssey will carry a maximum of 450 guests. Ninety percent of the 225 ocean-view suites have private verandas, and all feature full granite baths with separate tub and shower, Molton Brown products, a complimentary in-suite bar stocked to the guests' requests, and a flat-screen entertainment system with movies, television and music. Seabourn Square will be a concierge lounge. The Spa at Seabourn will feature a two-deck-high waterfall entry, gym with a Kinesis Wall, indoor/outdoor treatment rooms, a thalassotherapy pool and salon facilities. Jan 28, Applications Now Available for U.S. Passport Card

U.S. citizens may begin applying in advance for the new U.S. Passport Card beginning Feb. 1, in anticipation of land border travel document requirements.

The State Department said the cards should be available and mailed to applicants in spring 2008. The passport card will facilitate entry and expedite document processing at U.S. land and sea ports-of-entry when arriving from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. The card may not be used to travel by air. It will otherwise carry the rights and privileges of the U.S. passport book and will be adjudicated to the exact same standards.

The passport card is being issued in response to the needs of border resident communities for a less expensive and more portable alternative to the traditional passport book. The card will have the same validity period as a passport book: 10 years for an adult, five for children 15 and younger. For adults who already have a passport book, they may apply for the card as a passport renewal and pay only $20. First-time applicants pay $45 for adult cards and $35 for children.

Jan 21, Royal Caribbean Launches Contest to Name New "Genesis" Ships

Royal Caribbean International is partnering with USA Today on a contest to name the world's two largest cruise ships, currently code-named "Genesis I" and "Genesis II."

The winner of the naming contest will attend the naming ceremony as well as embark on a week-long, first-class, expense-paid cruise vacation on the ship he or she named. The six-week-long contest breaks maritime tradition where heads of state, corporations and governments selected the name of a ship.

Royal Caribbean said it is believed this is the first time that a member of the general public, not associated with the cruise industry, will have the chance to name a major cruise ship. The contest kicked off Friday in USA Today and on its website. The paper will look at how ships are traditionally named and how repetitive cruise ship names historically have been.

Readers will then be invited to submit their names for the new ships at www.namethatship.usatoday.com by Feb. 29. The Genesis ships will be 220,000 tons and accommodate 5,400 guests each. They are scheduled to debut in 2009 and 2010.

Jan 16, Passport Card Applications to Open Up Feb 1

U.S. citizens may begin applying in advance for the new U.S. Passport Card beginning Feb. 1, 2008, in anticipation of land border travel document requirements.

The U.S. Department of State expects that cards will be available and mailed to applicants in spring 2008.

The Department of State is issuing this passport card in response to the needs of border resident communities for a less expensive and more portable alternative to the traditional passport book.

For adults who already have a passport book, they may apply for the card as a passport renewal and pay only $20. First-time applicants will pay $45 for adult cards and $35 for children.

To facilitate the frequent travel of U.S. citizens living in border communities and to meet DHS's operational needs at land borders, the passport card will contain a vicinity-read radio frequency identification (RFID) chip. This chip will link the card to a stored record in secure government databases. There will be no personal information written to the RFID chip itself.

Jan 9, Crystal Cruises to Ban Smoking on Balconies

Crystal Cruises, starting in May, will prohibit smoking on verandas of all staterooms and suites aboard Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity. In keeping with lifestyle trends, most areas of Crystal ships have been non-smoking for several years, including restaurants and the main entertainment lounges. Non-smoking areas dominate most bars and lounges, although there are some tables that permit smoking. Cigarette smoking is permitted in private accommodations, although pipe-smoking and cigars are only permitted in the Connoisseur Club and most open decks.

"The majority of our guests are non-smoking, and travelers are used to more non-smoking environments today," said Gregg Michel, Crystal president. "We respect that smoking is a personal lifestyle decision but there is growing discomfort from non-smokers about veranda smoke negatively impacting the enjoyment of their personal outdoor living space." As with the current policy, guests who do not observe the non-smoking policy will first be asked to comply. Failure to do so can result in a guest being asked to leave the ship at his/her own expense. The new smoking policy takes effect with the May 7 London-to-Rome cruise on Crystal Serenity and the May 25 Athens-to-London cruise on Crystal Symphony.

Jan 8, Windstar's Wind Star Completes "Degrees of Difference"

Windstar Cruises' 148-guest Wind Star is the last of three ships to complete the Degrees of Difference multi-million dollar initiative to enhance the line's fleet of motor sailing yachts. Upgrades include remodeled bathrooms in all staterooms, an expanded beauty salon and a refurbished lounge. Stateroom bathrooms now have a more contemporary look with new fixtures, open glass shelves, new cabinets, granite countertops, porcelain sinks, and a magnifying mirror. Teak floors were refinished to retain the nautical style. Full-length mirrors and slippers were added in staterooms.

In the Lounge, the bar was relocated to a central location near the back of the room and refreshed with reupholstered furniture, new carpet, ceiling, lighting, and wall coverings. The Salon moved from Deck 1 to Deck 3 by the Lounge. Expanding into the area vacated by the bar, the salon space doubles in size with a new waiting area, two massage rooms, an area for facials and hair/nail treatments, and a pedicure chair. The number of massage appointments available for guests has doubled and new spa treatments have been added including La Therapie Hydralift Facial, Elemis Aroma Spa Seaweed Massage, and Ionithermie Cellulite Reduction Program.

Other additions include new tables and chairs in the Veranda, a new couch and ceiling in the Lobby and upgrades to public bathrooms. The Pool Bar got a new bottle display area, new lighting, and new wall and ceiling coverings. Upgrades were also completed for the technical operations of the ship. The four-masted Wind Star will sail roundtrip from Costa Rica January through March with a limited amount of Panama Canal cruises in the spring and winter, returning to the Greek Isles from May to October and offering a few Mediterranean itineraries in late spring and late fall.

The 312-guest Wind Surf completed Degrees of Difference upgrades in December 2006 and the 148-guest Wind Spirit completed upgrades in April 2007.

Jan 3, Princess' New Chef's Table Dinners to Roll Out Fleetwide

Designed as a unique treat for "foodies," Chef's Table experience offers a select group of gourmands the rare opportunity to be welcomed into the inner sanctum of the ship's galley to enjoy a full evening of memorable sights, tastes and conversation hosted by the executive chef. While many passengers are able to enjoy galley tours during the quiet off-hours, the Chef's Table experience takes interested diners behind the scenes during the height of dinner preparation where they'll also enjoy cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, followed by a special multi-course tasting dinner paired with selected wines in the dining room.

The Chef's Table begins when the Maitre d' personally escorts the passengers to the galley where they can observe the bustle of dinner-hour preparations and meet the executive chef, plus enjoy French champagne with appetizers. The chef previews the details of the menu he created for that evening, and the group is welcomed to their special table in the dining room. The multi-course menu is specially created by the chef, and is not offered anywhere else on the ship.

The fare might include anything from a focus on regional cuisine to a showcase of indigenous ingredients from a recent port. Each course is accompanied by a detailed explanation of special features, preparation methods, and tasting suggestions. Specially selected wines complement the meal. During the dessert course, the chef rejoins the group at their private table to participate in a discussion about the evening's meal, answer questions, and share culinary secrets perfected during many years of experience at sea and on land.

Additionally, each couple at the Chef's Table will receive a personalized autographed copy of Princess' best-selling cookbook, Courses, A Culinary Journey, which has sold more than 100,000 copies worldwide and is available on amazon.com. Guests will also enjoy a complimentary photo taken at the private table with the chef.

The Chef's Table experience can be reserved by up to 10 passengers per night, at a cost of $75 per person. Reservations are made onboard through the ship's DINE telephone line or in person at the dining reservations table set up on the first day of the cruise.

Nov 26, Cunard Takes Delivery of Queen Victoria

Cunard Line took delivery of its new ocean liner, the 90,000-ton Queen Victoria, in Venice on Saturday. Among those present for the handover ceremony were Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi and the Under Secretary of State, Department for Transport, Jim Fitzpatrick. The ceremony took place onboard the new vessel at the Fincantieri Marghera shipyard. Just after 11 a.m., following speeches by Prodi and Fitzpatrick, the Italian flag was ceremonially lowered and another Cunard liner entered the Register of British Shipping. The event, attended by an invited audience, was given a British emphasis with the performance of the Band of the Scots Guards.

"This ceremony to mark the completion of the ship, and our acceptance of delivery, is just the first of a number of significant events over the next few weeks, including the ship's official naming by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, in the presence of HRH The Prince of Wales, in Southampton on Dec. 10," said Carol Marlow, president of Cunard Line. "I'm certain the British will take this truly magnificent ship to their hearts, as they have all the Cunard Queens." Queen Victoria is due to leave the shipyard on Nov. 30, and sail to Southampton where it will berth at the City Cruise Terminal at 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 7. It will depart on its maiden voyage at 5 p.m. on Dec. 11. For more information, call 800-7-CUNARD or visit www.cunard.com.

Nov 14, Mexico Cruise Tax to Take Effect July 1

Mexico has approved a cruise passenger tax that is scheduled to take effect on July 1. The fee is 56 pesos, or about US$5, according to a statement issued by Carolina Crdenas, vice minister of tourism planning for SECTUR in Mexico.

Crdenas said 95 percent of the income generated by the head tax will go to municipalities for infrastructure works, conservation and maintenance programs, and cleaning and monitoring of the coastal zones. Five percent will be assigned to the National Institute of Migration. The resources will be distributed proportionally to the municipalities, taking into account the number of passengers their ports receive. The tax has been opposed by some Mexican ports, including Puerto Costa Maya. "We do not support the measure in question," Costa Maya President Teofilo Hamui said in mid-October.

Mar 12, Silversea Names New All-Suite Ship Silver Spirit

Silversea Cruises said its newest all-suite ship will be named Silver Spirit. The company made the announcement Tuesday at the Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention in Miami Beach, Florida. Currently under construction at Fincantieri's Ancona shipyard in Italy, the 540-guest vessel is scheduled to join the fleet in December 2009. Italian architect Giacomo Mortola is overseeing the design of the 36,000-ton vessel. "Silver Spirit's design will mirror the distinctive silhouette of our existing ships and will offer the same standards of luxury that our guests have come to expect," said Manfredi Lefebvre, Silversea's chairman. "But there will also be several significant enhancements, including a new supper club, an Asian-themed restaurant and an expanded spa facility that will rival the best spas on land."

Silversea President and CEO Amerigo Perasso said the ship will have a contemporary feel but with touches reminiscent of the 1930s. The space ratio will be a high 67. With a total of 270 ocean-view suites, the new ship will increase the number of accommodations in the most popular suite categories. Silver Spirit will feature more of the quick-to-sell-out Silver Suites, with a total of 26, and 222 Veranda Suites. There will also be six Grand Suites and two Owner's Suites. All but 12 suites will have balconies.

Plans call for a new supper club called Annabelle's that will serve gourmet cuisine followed by music and dance. Also planned are a new Asian restaurant, the main dining room, The Wine Restaurant and the casual Pool Grille. The new Spa at Silversea, which premiered during Silver Shadow's World Cruise last year, will be rolled out aboard the new vessel with dramatically more space. An aesthetically pleasing sanctuary is planned for guests to relax, de-stress and detox with an expanded menu of treatments. Silver Spirit will feature many of the same public lounges found on the line's existing ships, including an Observation Lounge, Vista Lounge (similar to Panorama Lounge on current fleet), Show Lounge, Humidor and Pool Bar, plus a new Lobby Bar styled along the lines of a European hotel, featuring Italian coffees complemented by champagne, wine and spirits -- all served at no charge.
