Mar 11, RCCL Cruise Brands Voluntarily Revise Fuel Supplement

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCCL) on Monday announced it has voluntarily agreed to eliminate its fuel supplement on bookings made prior to the announcement of the fuel supplement on Nov. 16. After working with the Florida Attorney General's office, RCCL said it will eliminate the fuel supplement for any guests who had a booking made prior to Nov. 16. Guests booked before Nov. 16 who paid the fuel supplement and have taken their cruise will receive a refund through the form of payment used to purchase their sailing. Guests booked before Nov. 16 who paid the fuel supplement and have not taken their cruise will receive their refund as an onboard credit during their sailing.

As originally announced, the company did not charge the fuel supplement to guests with bookings made and paid in full before Nov. 16. It will now eliminate the fuel supplement for guests with bookings made, but not paid in full, before that date. These latter guests were also provided with a three-week period in which to cancel their sailing without penalty. The company said it has been in discussions with the Florida Attorney General's office to ensure the fuel supplement was implemented "in a fair and reasonable manner."

The fuel supplement, which remains in place for North American bookings made on or after Nov. 16, involves three RCCL brands: Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Cruises. The fuel supplement consists of a $5 charge per guest, per day, for sailings that depart on or after Feb. 1. The fuel supplement applies to the first and second guests in each stateroom and does not exceed $70 per person per sailing. RCCL said the announcement will have no impact on the company's revenue projections, and that the company reaffirms its previous yield guidance. The Florida Attorney General's office is expected to issue a press release regarding this matter today.

RCCL operates Royal Carribean Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Cruises.

Mar 6, Alaska Proposes Tax Rebate to Cruisers

The Alaska State Legislature is considering a bill that would amend the cruise ship head tax that Alaska's citizens voted into law in 2006.

Senate Bill 168, which reached the Senate floor this week, would protect passengers from multiple head taxes, effectively capping the charge at $50 per passenger. The state's head tax is $50 but some municipalities, including Juneau and Ketchikan, charge their own passenger tax, said the bill's sponsor, Sen. Bert Stedman (R-Sitka) of the Senate Finance Committee.

"If other port communities impose their own municipal fees, the total taxes a passenger pays will obviously grow," said the Senate Finance Committee in a statement about the bill. "Although it is difficult to quantify, at some point these municipal passenger fees stacked on top of the state head tax could reduce travel to Alaska or decrease the amount cruise passengers spend once they arrive."

The committee said the bill would entitle cruise passengers to a "dollar-for-dollar credit equal to the lesser of $10 or the actual amount of any similar tax the passenger paid at any of the ship's first five ports of call."

Feb 14, Azamara, Celebrity Captains to Perform Weddings at Sea

Azamara Cruises and Celebrity Cruises have made arrangements for ship captains to marry guests at sea. The sister lines plan to launch legal, captain-led wedding ceremonies later this year.

Celebrity has long partnered with The Wedding Experience to offer onboard vow renewals at sea and in-port wedding ceremonies. With the recent re-registration of seven of Celebrity's eight ships in Malta, where Azamara's two ships also are registered, government regulations have changed to allow for captains to perform legal marriages while the ships sail.

Guests being married at sea will be offered a variety of packages that include private receptions in the ship's specialty restaurant, cake, champagne, and more. Basic captain-performed wedding packages begin at $2,500. Guests should book their wedding in advance of the sailing to allow time for the processing of licenses and other legal documents. Guests can also arrange weddings during Alaska cruise-tours at Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge and The Hotel Alyeska, amid the hanging glaciers of the Girdwood Valley or with Mount McKinley as a backdrop. These ceremonies can take place from June to September.

Feb 12, NCL to Withdraw Second Ship from Hawaii

NCL Corp. will withdraw the Pride of Aloha from the Hawaii market effective May 11. The ship will be transferred to Star Cruises and will be re-flagged and deployed in Asia in the summer. The remaining year-round ship in Hawaii will be the Pride of America, introduced in 2005.

The company announced and put on sale Pride of America's sailings through 2010; it offers inter-island cruises departing every Saturday from Honolulu. A year ago, NCL announced the transfer this month of the Pride of Hawaii to Europe, and rename it Norwegian Jade.

For guests booked on Pride of Aloha from May 11 and beyond, NCL is holding space and will offer the same cruise fare as they currently have paid on their Pride of Aloha cruise if they would like to transfer to the same week on Pride of America, departing one day earlier. In addition, guests will receive a $100-per-person onboard credit (up to $200 per stateroom).

For guests who made their air and/or hotel arrangements through NCL, NCL will protect the rates they currently have paid and cover any air or hotel change fees. For guests who purchased their own air, NCL will protect up to the first $100 per person of any increase in air costs and cover up to $75 per person in air change fees. For guests who made independent hotel arrangements, NCL will cover any hotel change fees up to $25 per person.

Guests may book any other NCL cruise and receive a $100-per-person onboard credit (up to $200 per stateroom) if they rebook by March 7. In addition, NCL will cover up to $75 per person in air change fees and up to $25 per person in hotel change fees. Guests may cancel their cruise and receive a full refund if NCL is notified by March 7. In addition, NCL will cover up to $75 per person in air change fees and up to $25 per person in hotel change fees. After March 7, cancellation fees will apply in accordance with NCL's cancellation policy.

Following a 14-day scheduled dry dock in Hawaii from April 26 to May 10, Pride of America will sail its four-island itinerary with a change in order of ports, including an overnight in Nawiliwili, Kauai; an afternoon cruise of the Napali Coast; Hilo, Hawaii; an evening sail by Mount Kilauea; Kona, Hawaii; and an overnight in Kahului, Maui. All of the Freestyle 2.0 enhancements will be rolled out on Pride of America during the ship's dry-dock.

Feb 6, Celebrity Unveils New Restaurants for Celebrity Solstice

Celebrity Cruises said its new Celebrity Solstice, set to sail on its first revenue cruise on Dec. 14, will feature 10 restaurants. The line unveiled its dining plans at an event at New York's Per Se restaurant last night. Celebrity Solstice will carry approximately 2,850 passengers.

Celebrity said it has partnered with some of the best restaurant designers in the business to create the new restaurants onboard Celebrity Solstice, among them Adam Tihany, who has created such restaurants as Per Se, Jean Georges, Le Cirque, The Sea Grill and Osteria del Circo in New York; Aureole, Bouchon and Seablue in Las Vegas; and Monte's and the Mandarin Bar in the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in London. Tihany, in his first restaurant aboard a cruise ship, has designed the two-level Grand Epernay dining room; the classic steakhouse Tuscan Grille, and the Oceanview Cafe on the ship's lido deck. Grand Epernay features a two-story wine tower, similar to what Tihany created in Aureole in Vegas.

The new menus are being created by Jacques Van Staden, Celebrity's vice president of food and beverage, in conjunction with Celebrity's culinary consultant Blau & Associates. Van Staden was previously one of the top chefs and restaurateurs in Washington, D.C., and Las Vegas. Blau is credited with shaping the dining experience at Bellagio and Wynn Resort in Las Vegas, and is also developing the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino's Simon kitchen and bar.

Dining venues aboard Celebrity Solstice will include Grand Epernay, the main dining room open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, featuring French cuisine and the two-story wine tower; Tuscan Grille, a combination of Mediterranean and California Napa cuisine; Silk Harvest, a casual specialty restaurant featuring Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese, Chinese and Indian selections; Blu, which offers "clean cuisine" exclusively for guests booked on the new AquaClass category of accommodations, with healthy food options; Murano, a twist on the restaurant of the same name on Celebrity Century, blending classic and modern Continental cuisine in an elegant setting; Bistro on Five, a casual dining area where guests can eat or take out sandwiches, soups, salads, desserts and other entrees; Cafe al Bacio & Gelateria, an upscale coffee house serving European cafe fare as well as gelato, signature coffees, teas, fresh-based pastries and more; AquaSpa Cafe, a dining option for guests seeking lighter fare; Mast Grill & Bar, featuring comfort food in a poolside venue; Oceanview Cafe & Grill, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with food stations reflecting where the ship is sailing.

Jan 28, Applications Now Available for U.S. Passport Card

U.S. citizens may begin applying in advance for the new U.S. Passport Card beginning Feb. 1, in anticipation of land border travel document requirements.

The State Department said the cards should be available and mailed to applicants in spring 2008. The passport card will facilitate entry and expedite document processing at U.S. land and sea ports-of-entry when arriving from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. The card may not be used to travel by air. It will otherwise carry the rights and privileges of the U.S. passport book and will be adjudicated to the exact same standards.

The passport card is being issued in response to the needs of border resident communities for a less expensive and more portable alternative to the traditional passport book. The card will have the same validity period as a passport book: 10 years for an adult, five for children 15 and younger. For adults who already have a passport book, they may apply for the card as a passport renewal and pay only $20. First-time applicants pay $45 for adult cards and $35 for children.

Jan 21, Royal Caribbean Launches Contest to Name New "Genesis" Ships

Royal Caribbean International is partnering with USA Today on a contest to name the world's two largest cruise ships, currently code-named "Genesis I" and "Genesis II."

The winner of the naming contest will attend the naming ceremony as well as embark on a week-long, first-class, expense-paid cruise vacation on the ship he or she named. The six-week-long contest breaks maritime tradition where heads of state, corporations and governments selected the name of a ship.

Royal Caribbean said it is believed this is the first time that a member of the general public, not associated with the cruise industry, will have the chance to name a major cruise ship. The contest kicked off Friday in USA Today and on its website. The paper will look at how ships are traditionally named and how repetitive cruise ship names historically have been.

Readers will then be invited to submit their names for the new ships at www.namethatship.usatoday.com by Feb. 29. The Genesis ships will be 220,000 tons and accommodate 5,400 guests each. They are scheduled to debut in 2009 and 2010.

Jan 9, Crystal Cruises to Ban Smoking on Balconies

Crystal Cruises, starting in May, will prohibit smoking on verandas of all staterooms and suites aboard Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity. In keeping with lifestyle trends, most areas of Crystal ships have been non-smoking for several years, including restaurants and the main entertainment lounges. Non-smoking areas dominate most bars and lounges, although there are some tables that permit smoking. Cigarette smoking is permitted in private accommodations, although pipe-smoking and cigars are only permitted in the Connoisseur Club and most open decks.

"The majority of our guests are non-smoking, and travelers are used to more non-smoking environments today," said Gregg Michel, Crystal president. "We respect that smoking is a personal lifestyle decision but there is growing discomfort from non-smokers about veranda smoke negatively impacting the enjoyment of their personal outdoor living space." As with the current policy, guests who do not observe the non-smoking policy will first be asked to comply. Failure to do so can result in a guest being asked to leave the ship at his/her own expense. The new smoking policy takes effect with the May 7 London-to-Rome cruise on Crystal Serenity and the May 25 Athens-to-London cruise on Crystal Symphony.

Windstar Cruises' 148-guest Wind Star is the last of three ships to complete the Degrees of Difference multi-million dollar initiative to enhance the line's fleet of motor sailing yachts. Upgrades include remodeled bathrooms in all staterooms, an expanded beauty salon and a refurbished lounge. Stateroom bathrooms now have a more contemporary look with new fixtures, open glass shelves, new cabinets, granite countertops, porcelain sinks, and a magnifying mirror. Teak floors were refinished to retain the nautical style. Full-length mirrors and slippers were added in staterooms.

In the Lounge, the bar was relocated to a central location near the back of the room and refreshed with reupholstered furniture, new carpet, ceiling, lighting, and wall coverings. The Salon moved from Deck 1 to Deck 3 by the Lounge. Expanding into the area vacated by the bar, the salon space doubles in size with a new waiting area, two massage rooms, an area for facials and hair/nail treatments, and a pedicure chair. The number of massage appointments available for guests has doubled and new spa treatments have been added including La Therapie Hydralift Facial, Elemis Aroma Spa Seaweed Massage, and Ionithermie Cellulite Reduction Program.

Other additions include new tables and chairs in the Veranda, a new couch and ceiling in the Lobby and upgrades to public bathrooms. The Pool Bar got a new bottle display area, new lighting, and new wall and ceiling coverings. Upgrades were also completed for the technical operations of the ship. The four-masted Wind Star will sail roundtrip from Costa Rica January through March with a limited amount of Panama Canal cruises in the spring and winter, returning to the Greek Isles from May to October and offering a few Mediterranean itineraries in late spring and late fall.

The 312-guest Wind Surf completed Degrees of Difference upgrades in December 2006 and the 148-guest Wind Spirit completed upgrades in April 2007.

Jan 3, Princess' New Chef's Table Dinners to Roll Out Fleetwide

Designed as a unique treat for "foodies," Chef's Table experience offers a select group of gourmands the rare opportunity to be welcomed into the inner sanctum of the ship's galley to enjoy a full evening of memorable sights, tastes and conversation hosted by the executive chef. While many passengers are able to enjoy galley tours during the quiet off-hours, the Chef's Table experience takes interested diners behind the scenes during the height of dinner preparation where they'll also enjoy cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, followed by a special multi-course tasting dinner paired with selected wines in the dining room.

The Chef's Table begins when the Maitre d' personally escorts the passengers to the galley where they can observe the bustle of dinner-hour preparations and meet the executive chef, plus enjoy French champagne with appetizers. The chef previews the details of the menu he created for that evening, and the group is welcomed to their special table in the dining room. The multi-course menu is specially created by the chef, and is not offered anywhere else on the ship.

The fare might include anything from a focus on regional cuisine to a showcase of indigenous ingredients from a recent port. Each course is accompanied by a detailed explanation of special features, preparation methods, and tasting suggestions. Specially selected wines complement the meal. During the dessert course, the chef rejoins the group at their private table to participate in a discussion about the evening's meal, answer questions, and share culinary secrets perfected during many years of experience at sea and on land.

Additionally, each couple at the Chef's Table will receive a personalized autographed copy of Princess' best-selling cookbook, Courses, A Culinary Journey, which has sold more than 100,000 copies worldwide and is available on amazon.com. Guests will also enjoy a complimentary photo taken at the private table with the chef.

The Chef's Table experience can be reserved by up to 10 passengers per night, at a cost of $75 per person. Reservations are made onboard through the ship's DINE telephone line or in person at the dining reservations table set up on the first day of the cruise.

The British line's three ships, the Queen Mary 2, the Queen Elizabeth 2 and the recently launched Queen Victoria, will sail together out of New York harbor at 6:30 p.m. The QM2 will depart from its homeport in Brooklyn, and the QE2 and Queen Victoria will depart from piers on Manhattan's West Side; the three vessels will rendezvous to sail past the Statue of Liberty during a fireworks display at about 7:00 p.m. The QE2 will then depart on its 26th and final world cruise -- it retires in November to Dubai, where it will be used as a floating hotel.

Nov 30, Carnival Splendor Nears Completion in Italy

Carnival Cruise Lines' new 113,300-ton Carnival Splendor -- the largest vessel ever constructed for the line -- is undergoing final exterior and interior outfitting at Fincantieri's Sestri shipyard in Italy in preparation for its debut in Europe next summer. The first in a new series of vessel for the line, Carnival Splendor will include a two-level, 5,500-square-foot children's play area -- the largest in the Carnival fleet -- and a 21,000-square-foot "Cloud 9 Spa" featuring a thalassotherapy pool and thermal suite. Adjacent will be 68 spa staterooms and suites, another first for the line.

Following a one-time eight-day European voyage from Genoa July 2, the 3,006-passenger ship will launch Carnival's first 12-day Northern Europe cruise program from London (Dover) July 13, followed by a series of 12-day cruises from Rome (Civitavecchia) to the Mediterranean, Greece and Turkey. The ship then repositions to the U.S. to operate seven-day cruises from Fort Lauderdale, followed by a series of 14- to 18-day South America cruises, also a first for Carnival. After this program, Carnival Splendor will be deployed to Long Beach, Calif., to operate year-round seven-day Mexican Riviera cruises.

Nov 26, Cunard Takes Delivery of Queen Victoria

Cunard Line took delivery of its new ocean liner, the 90,000-ton Queen Victoria, in Venice on Saturday. Among those present for the handover ceremony were Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi and the Under Secretary of State, Department for Transport, Jim Fitzpatrick. The ceremony took place onboard the new vessel at the Fincantieri Marghera shipyard. Just after 11 a.m., following speeches by Prodi and Fitzpatrick, the Italian flag was ceremonially lowered and another Cunard liner entered the Register of British Shipping. The event, attended by an invited audience, was given a British emphasis with the performance of the Band of the Scots Guards.

"This ceremony to mark the completion of the ship, and our acceptance of delivery, is just the first of a number of significant events over the next few weeks, including the ship's official naming by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, in the presence of HRH The Prince of Wales, in Southampton on Dec. 10," said Carol Marlow, president of Cunard Line. "I'm certain the British will take this truly magnificent ship to their hearts, as they have all the Cunard Queens." Queen Victoria is due to leave the shipyard on Nov. 30, and sail to Southampton where it will berth at the City Cruise Terminal at 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 7. It will depart on its maiden voyage at 5 p.m. on Dec. 11. For more information, call 800-7-CUNARD or visit www.cunard.com.

Nov 20, Windjammer License to Sell Cruise Travel Expires

Windjammer Barefoot Cruises has let expire its license to sell travel in the state of Florida. The company had previously registered as a seller of travel in Florida, which requires an annual renewal. Windjammer's license expired on Nov. 9 and has not been renewed as of Nov. 19, according to Terence McElroy, spokesman for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. "We are in the process of attempting to verify whether this company remains open and operating and, if they are, we will send a case to our investigation section for some sort of enforcement action to block them from continuing to sell while being unregistered," McElroy said. "On the other hand, if they didn't register because they are no longer selling cruises or out of business, that will probably be unnecessary."

Despite the expiration of the license, Windjammer's website still had a booking icon Monday that would accept payment via credit cards or PayPal. McElroy said the department has received about 15 complaints from consumers "who are dissatisfied with their service or otherwise unhappy with the service they were provided by this company. We are attempting to mediate them." Windjammer's four sailing ships have not operated for roughly two months. Joseph Burke, a member of the family that owns the company through a trust, has tried to restart operations with cruises on the Legacy out of Costa Rica. However, several scheduled departures were cancelled at the last minute, leaving some passengers scrambling to find a hotel in Costa Rica. Calls to Joseph Burke and the Windjammer office were not returned by press time. For more information, contact the state of Florida's Consumer Services Division at 800-HELPFLA within Florida or 850-922-2966 outside Florida or visit www.800helpfla.com. Nov 14, Mexico Cruise Tax to Take Effect July 1

Mexico has approved a cruise passenger tax that is scheduled to take effect on July 1. The fee is 56 pesos, or about US$5, according to a statement issued by Carolina Crdenas, vice minister of tourism planning for SECTUR in Mexico.

Crdenas said 95 percent of the income generated by the head tax will go to municipalities for infrastructure works, conservation and maintenance programs, and cleaning and monitoring of the coastal zones. Five percent will be assigned to the National Institute of Migration. The resources will be distributed proportionally to the municipalities, taking into account the number of passengers their ports receive. The tax has been opposed by some Mexican ports, including Puerto Costa Maya. "We do not support the measure in question," Costa Maya President Teofilo Hamui said in mid-October.

Nov 6, THE YACHTS OF SEABOURN ORDERS THIRD NEW ULTRA LUXURY SHIP

A year after The Yachts of Seabourn announced that it would build two new, ultra luxury ships, advance booking activity for the first, Seabourn Odyssey, has led to the line's decision to exercise the option for another. The third sister ship will be built by T. Mariotti S.p.A. of Genoa, Italy for delivery in summer, 2011. Seabourn, a division of Miami-based Carnival Corporation, has agreed to the project at an all in cost of approximately Euros 200 million.

Seabourn Odyssey will debut in June of 2009. Bookings for its maiden season are being accepted from the general public starting today, after a successful advance booking period reserved for past guests of the line. The second ship in the series is scheduled to enter service in the summer of 2010.

The enthusiasm shown by advance bookings for the Seabourn Odyssey, combined with research indicating a continuing robust expansion in demand for ultra luxury cruising in general, convinced Seabourn that they have the right formula at the right time.

That formula is embodied in the new, 32,000-GRT ships, which will accommodate just 450 guests in 225 luxury suites, ninety percent of which will offer private verandas. The ships are specifically designed to achieve a balance between Seabourn's small-ship signatures, such as its highly personalized service, truly fine dining and exceptional delivery of destinations, with the added spaciousness, features and amenities that a larger ship will allow. Seabourn's guests will continue to enjoy an unmatched level of personalized service from a skilled and dedicated staff, and one of the highest space-per-guest ratios in the industry.

The new ships will maintain the yacht-like onboard ambience that has won the loyalty of affluent travelers, who appreciate all-inclusive policies such as complimentary open bars, open-seating dining and a myriad of thoughtful touches the company calls its Signature Delights.

Marco Bisagno, president of T.Mariotti S.p.A. noted, "Seabourn's decision to exercise the option well in advance of its expiration indicates that they are pleased with our relationship and the progress of the work thus far. It has become increasingly clear that this design is the perfect balance of intimacy and amenities that foretells the future for ultra luxury cruising vessels.

The design specifications call for hulls 650 feet long, with a beam of 84 feet and a draft of 21 feet. The ships will be powered by diesel-generated electricity and operate with twin screw propellers, with a service speed of 19 knots. They will be equipped with two bow thrusters to enhance maneuverability and two stabilizers. The ships will also be "green ships" employing advanced wastewater treatment technology.

Nov 2, Windjammer Reportedly Cancels Nov. 3 "Restart" Cruise

Windjammer Barefoot Cruises has apparently cancelled the Nov. 3 departure of the Legacy, a cruise billed as the restart of the financially troubled line. Two members of the Burke family, which owns the company, have promoted a $399 offer for a weeklong cruise on Legacy as part of the "Windjammer Restart" program. The discounted fares were purportedly to be used as "startup money for food, fuel and wages." The company's four sailing ships have been laid up in ports in the Caribbean and Costa Rica. Joseph Burke, the youngest son of founder Capt. Mike Burke, has been joined by Danny Walsh, Capt. Burke's grandson, in trying to resurrect the line.

While company executives have not responded to phone or email messages left by Travel Pulse Daily on and off for two months, Joseph Burke and Walsh have posted messages on a website of devoted fans in recent days -- most recently to promote the Nov. 3 cruise. However, on Nov. 1, a memo apparently signed by Walsh said the Nov. 3 cruise is cancelled. "We would like you to know that we will be sailing on the week of the 17th," the memo reads. The message invites passengers already in Costa Rica to board the Legacy. "Feel free to call to rebook, we will cover air charges," the message states. However, the company's website, which on Oct. 31 included a PayPal link for booking the $399 fare, did not include any notice of the cancellation on Nov. 1. Several travel insurers are no longer covering Windjammer voyages, and ASTA has issued a cautionary alert to its members. For more information, call 800-327-2600 or visit www.windjammer.com

Oct 19, Costa Orders 2 New 3000 Passenger Ships

Costa Crociere, the leading cruise line in Italy and Europe, has announced an order for two new 114,200-ton ships to be delivered in 2011 and 2012. Costa Crociere S.p.A, the Italian subsidiary of Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE CUK), signed an agreement with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri for the construction of the two new vessels at an all-in cost of approximately 1 billion (510 million per ship). The two new ships will be built at Fincantieri's Marghera shipyard and be sister ships to the Costa Concordia, Costa Serena and Costa Pacifica, the latter of which is currently being built at Fincantieris Sestri Ponente shipyard. The new ships will each be able to accommodate 3,780 passengers in total (including all upper berths) or 3,012 guests based on double occupancy.

The two new ships ordered will offer the same innovative elements featured on the other Concordia class ships including the 23,000 square-foot Samsara spa, which is one of the largest spas at sea, complete with exclusive cabins featuring direct access to the spa and a dedicated restaurant. The ships will also feature two swimming pools with retractable magrodomes, the central one equipped with a giant movie screen and authentic Grand Prix race car driving simulators, which provide the most accurate representation of Formula One driving available. In addition, the new ships will boast 17 additional veranda cabins and an overall total of 1,506 cabins, six more than the other Concordia class ships. Cruise Vacations - Have Cruise Holidays Changed For The Worse?

Oct 19, Seabourn Details Odyssey's Inaugural Itineraries

Pam Conover, president and CEO of the Yachts of Seabourn, speaking at a press conference in New York yesterday, said the new 450-passenger Seabourn Odyssey will launch her inaugural year itinerary in Venice on June 24, 2009. The luxury ship is being built in the Mariotti Shipyard in Genoa, Italy. As of yesterday (Oct. 17), guests previously on the waiting list may select their choices of departures and luxury suites. As of Nov. 5, 2007, bookings will be made available to the general public. The Odyssey is the first of two ships being built by Seabourn; the other will debut in 2010. The two ships will join Seabourn's existing fleet of three 208-passenger ships, including Seabourn Spirit, Legend and Pride.

Seabourn Odyssey -- which is similar in design to Seabourn's existing vessels, but twice as big -- will feature 225 suites, ranging in size from 300 to 1,100 square feet. Ninety percent of which will have balconies of 65 square feet or more. It will have a main indoor restaurant; another indoor/outdoor restaurant called the Colonnade; Restaurant 2, a smaller dining facility; and a Patio Grill, all showcasing Charlie Palmer cuisine. There will also be an 8,600-square-foot, two-level spa and a separate fitness center. Seabourn Square, an innovative "concierge lounge" will invite guests to access every service they might require in a club-like ambience. It will include a library, upscale shops, outdoor terrace, a coffee bar, and concierge staffing. A much bigger pool deck will feature a larger pool and a place to interact during the day and evening.

The ship's first cruise will be a 14-day sailing from Venice to Istanbul, with ports of call in Croatia, Greece and Turkey. After that, it will sail on a cruise of the Black Sea, before returning to seven-day sailings from Istanbul to Piraeus, Piraeus to Venice, Venice to Piraeus, and Piraeus to Istanbul. These cruises can be combined into longer 14-day or 21-day sailings. On Jan. 4, 2010, Odyssey will embark on its first 108-day world cruise, touching five continents. The sailing will include Tahiti, Australia, Bali, Vietnam, Hong Kong, India, and a trip throughout the Suez Canal, and more.

Oct 10, Windjammer Reports It is Still in Business

Despite the fact that Windjammer Barefoot Cruises is going through tough times, the line claims it is still in business and departures are being planned. Danny Walsh, grandson of the line's founder, Captain Burke, is working with the legal entities that now control the company to breathe new life into it, according to the line. "We are actively working with several investor groups on a viable plan to continue the Windjammer tradition." Walsh said.

Last Friday, critical payments were made to all shipboard staff, and other immediate debt obligations are planned shortly. Arrangements are now under way to restart the line's Caribbean and Costa Rica cruises. Essential crew and staff are working to continue vital operations on all of the ships in the Windjammer fleet. A communications plan is under development to alert future customers about their cruise status. Windjammer is asking its pending customers to "stay fast" and to check on its website, which will be back online shortly, for the latest information on sailings. Meanwhile, the line has cancelled its Oct. 14 and Oct. 21 departures and hopes to reschedule as many passengers on future cruises as possible.

Windjammer's difficulties had prompted ASTA to warn its members about booking the line.
