Despite the fact that Windjammer Barefoot Cruises is going through tough times, the line claims it is still in business and departures are being planned. Danny Walsh, grandson of the line's founder, Captain Burke, is working with the legal entities that now control the company to breathe new life into it, according to the line. "We are actively working with several investor groups on a viable plan to continue the Windjammer tradition." Walsh said.
Last Friday, critical payments were made to all shipboard staff, and other immediate debt obligations are planned shortly. Arrangements are now under way to restart the line's Caribbean and Costa Rica cruises. Essential crew and staff are working to continue vital operations on all of the ships in the Windjammer fleet. A communications plan is under development to alert future customers about their cruise status. Windjammer is asking its pending customers to "stay fast" and to check on its website, which will be back online shortly, for the latest information on sailings. Meanwhile, the line has cancelled its Oct. 14 and Oct. 21 departures and hopes to reschedule as many passengers on future cruises as possible.
Windjammer's difficulties had prompted ASTA to warn its members about booking the line.
